The recent murder of Albert Ojwang while in police custody has sent shockwaves across the country, reopening deep wounds among Kenya’s Gen Z population.
His death adds to the growing list of young lives allegedly lost at the hands of state security agencies under the Ruto administration.
Albert’s only “crime” was exercising his constitutional right to free expression making a fair and critical comment on social media about Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Eliud Lagat. Shockingly, Mr. Lagat is not only the complainant in this case but also the official who reportedly ordered Albert’s arrest. He must now be held fully accountable.
Mr. Lagat’s involvement raises disturbing questions.
He is the same officer who, on Sunday, April 6, 2025, reportedly withdrew police protection from a church service in Mwiki, opening the door for hired thugs to disrupt worship and assault congregants.
Suspending junior officers at Central Police Station, where Albert died, is not enough. It is a smokescreen to distract the public.
If there is to be any credible investigation, Mr. Lagat must be suspended immediately.
There are alarming reports that Mr. Lagat is personally running both Kamukunji and Central Police Stations without the knowledge or oversight of the Inspector General.
These stations, many now say, have become unofficial torture chambers.
This is precisely why Albert was transferred from Homa Bay to Central Police Station where he met his tragic end.
To Albert’s family, the people of Homa Bay County, his friends, and all Kenyans especially the youth I stand with you.
We must demand justice for Albert.
His death is not an isolated incident; it is a symbol of the brutal oppression being inflicted on a generation.
What have our young people done to deserve this?
Why are their voices met with violence instead of dialogue?
This government, formed under the guise of unity, is beginning to resemble something far darker.
What was branded a “broad-based government” is starting to look like a “blood-based government” one powered by the spilled blood of young Kenyans.
It was born in protest, and it continues to survive in silence as more lives are lost.
President Ruto, we implore you: leave our children alone.
You swore an oath on the Holy Bible to protect the lives and property of all Kenyans.
How many more gallons of blood must be shed before this violence ends?
Albert Ojwang should never have died in custody.
Kenya is not and must never become a mafia state.
