Counties in Kenya are getting some money, about Kshs. 7.387 billion, to help them deal with climate issues.
This money comes from the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program.
Last year, these counties got Kshs. 979 million to help make them stronger in dealing with climate challenges.
The Kshs. 7.387 billion will be shared among 44 counties that met specific requirements from the FLLoCA program.
How much each county gets depends on how well they meet these requirements.
To get this money, counties had to do a few things.
They had to set up institutions to handle climate money and plans, like a County Climate Change Fund and a County Climate Change Unit.
They also had to study the climate risks in their area and make plans to deal with them, especially at the local level.
Counties also had to put 1.5% of their development money into the County Climate Change Fund.
This means they set aside Kshs. 3 billion this year.
The National Treasury and Planning, along with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and the Council of Governors, manage this program.
The money comes from the national and county governments, the World Bank, and the governments of Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden.
This money will help counties make plans and take action to deal with climate change risks in areas like farming, water, and taking care of nature.
It’s a step towards a safer and more stable future for people in Kenya.
