Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on police to take urgent action to halt the ongoing violence against young people in the country.
Expressing her deep concern, she highlighted the alarming trend of mysterious deaths that have been reported nationwide.
Speaking at the funeral of Seth Nyakio, daughter of Kirinyaga nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Lucy Njeri, who was tragically found murdered in Thika on October 14, Waiguru emphasized the need for investigative agencies to accelerate their efforts and bring those responsible to justice.
Describing Nyakio as a “joyful and caring individual” who did not deserve such a fate, Waiguru lamented the circumstances of her death.
Nyakio had traveled to Thika to visit a friend, and just a day before her murder, she had shared a photo with friends and asked her mother for Sh1,000, which was quickly sent.
The next day, she was discovered dead in her rented room, with post-mortem results confirming that she had been strangled and sexually assaulted.
Governor Waiguru expressed grave concerns over the rising incidents of femicide in the country.
“We cannot allow these killings to continue. It’s heartbreaking to see our youth being lost to crime and violence,” she stated.
She insisted that those who perpetrate such heinous acts must be held accountable.
“We need more than just assurances; we demand to see real action that leads to the end of these tragedies.
Let us hope this will be the last death of its kind,” she urged.
Waiguru raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Nyakio’s death, pointing out the crowded nature of the area and wondering how such a crime could occur without anyone noticing.
“Given that the neighborhood is so densely populated, how could no one hear anything despite having over 30 people living nearby?” she questioned.
She urged local leaders to actively engage in crime prevention efforts to enhance the safety of residential areas.
In her remarks, MCA Lucy Njeri expressed her determination to see justice for her daughter.
Despite providing critical information to the authorities, she lamented that the killers remain at large.
“I will not rest until those responsible are apprehended,” she vowed.
