Kirinyaga Villages Isolated As River Overflow Causes Flooding

Intense rainfall in Kirinyaga Central and surrounding areas has led to severe flooding, isolating several villages from Kutus town and other nearby regions.

The flooding has been caused by the overflow of the Icakimango River, which feeds into the larger River Thiba.

As the riverbanks burst, residents expressed concern over the growing threat to their safety and property.

Harrison Ngiria, a local resident, shared his worry about the flooding after narrowly escaping a collapsing perimeter wall during the floods.

The extreme weather has also disrupted the routines of Kirinyaga University students, forcing them to take detours to reach their hostels.

The village of Ngomongo has experienced similar challenges in the past, as floods have struck the area before.

Contributing factors include heavy rainfall from the Mt. Kenya forest and inadequate drainage systems in Kutus town.

The flooding has caused significant humanitarian impacts, with over 40 families displaced from the Kanyekiine ward and the neighboring Kangai ward.

To assist those affected by the flooding, the Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament has launched support efforts and encouraged residents in flood-prone regions to seek safer locations.

Additionally, Governor Anne Waiguru has issued a caution to residents near the Thiba Dam in Gichugu, urging them to stay alert as water levels continue to rise.

The impact of the flooding extends beyond displacement, with reports indicating that over 600 families have been displaced in the area.

Tragically, the floods have also claimed lives in the Mwea West sub-county, according to a report by the Kirinyaga Red Cross.
