Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs Enforcement officers have successfully intercepted a truck carrying 7,500 litres of suspected uncustomed ethanol at the Lwakhakha Border Station as part of their ongoing efforts to combat illicit trade.
In a statement, the KRA reported that officers stopped the truck during a routine inspection, uncovering a shipment stored in 30 drums, each containing 250 litres of ethanol.
Unfortunately, the driver managed to escape arrest, leaving with the keys to the vehicle. KRA officials are now scrutinizing the truck’s official documentation to identify the owner and obtain the driver’s details.
“When the truck arrived from Uganda, it was directed to the verification area.
However, the driver fled with the keys shortly after reaching that area,” the statement noted.
The truck has been detained at the Lwakhakha Border Station while further investigations are carried out.
The issue of illicit trade poses significant challenges for revenue collection, national security, and public health in Kenya.
To address these concerns, KRA has implemented a comprehensive strategy that includes deploying specialized teams to enhance market surveillance and combat illegal trading practices.
Through collaborative initiatives, the agency aims to ensure compliance with legal standards while protecting against organized crime, smuggling, commercial fraud, and other related threats.
As part of its efforts to bolster border security, KRA has established a dedicated border security unit that actively monitors the movement of cargo and individuals to prevent tax evasion and mitigate security risks.
Moreover, KRA officers are working closely with local security committees to share intelligence and reduce illegal activities at border points.
