A 54-year-old man died after a fire gutted his single-room house in Mwiki, Kasarani, on Wednesday evening.
Police identified the victim as George Mwangi Njuguna, who perished after a fire broke out in his rented house at Redsoil 1st Street.
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased returned home at around 7.30 p.m. while appearing intoxicated and locked himself inside the house. A fire later broke out under circumstances that are yet to be established.
Residents rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue him by breaking into the house. However, by the time they gained entry and extinguished the flames, George had already died. His body was extensively burnt.
Police said the fire was confined to three single-room houses and did not spread beyond the affected structures, although property of unknown value was destroyed.
The body was moved to the Nairobi City Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
Elsewhere, the body of a man who drowned in the Nyando River has been recovered, police in Nyakach Sub-County have confirmed.
According to police, the body of Fredrick Odiwour Yogo, who had been reported missing after a drowning incident on August 5, was found floating in the Nyando River at Wasare Sublocation in Rangul Location, about nine kilometres downstream from where he is believed to have entered the water.
With the assistance of local residents, the body was retrieved from the river before being transported to the Pap Onditi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning are ongoing. No foul play has been reported at this stage.
And police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 22-year-old man whose body was found floating along the shores of Lake Victoria at Ngegu Beach in Homa Bay County.
The incident was reported on Wednesday evening after personnel attached to Kochia Ngegu Water Supply spotted a body floating near the shoreline at around 5 p.m. and alerted authorities.
Police officers from Ngegu Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rangwe Sub-County, visited the scene and identified the deceased as Stephen Diko Adek, a resident of Kabong’o Village in West Kochia Location.
By the time officers arrived, members of the public had already retrieved the body from the water.
A preliminary examination revealed that the deceased had sustained a deep wound on his left hand.
He was dressed in a black undergarment with white stripes and had a black Crocs sandal on his left foot.
The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said the cause of death has not yet been established, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances under which the man died.
