Italian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who had been on the run for 30 years, has passed away.
He was one of Italy’s most wanted criminals until his arrest earlier this year.
Matteo Messina Denaro, 61 years old, was believed to be the leader of the notorious Cosa Nostra Mafia.
He was arrested in January while undergoing cancer treatment.
Denaro faced allegations of being involved in numerous murders and was sentenced to life in prison in 2002, even though he was not physically present during the trial.
He once bragged that he could “fill a cemetery” with his victims.
Additionally, he oversaw various criminal activities like extortion, illegal waste disposal, money laundering, and drug trafficking for the Cosa Nostra crime group.
Despite being a fugitive since 1993, Messina Denaro was still able to give orders to his subordinates from secret hideouts.
Recently, he fell into a coma and passed away in a hospital in the Italian city of L’Aquila.
He had requested not to receive aggressive medical treatment after undergoing cancer-related surgery, which he did not recover from.
L’Aquila Mayor Pierluigi Biondi confirmed Denaro’s death and described it as “the epilogue of an existence lived without remorse or regret, a painful chapter in recent history that we cannot erase”
In addition to his criminal activities, Denaro was known as the last “secret-keeper” of the Cosa Nostra.
Many informers and prosecutors believed he held crucial information and knew the names of individuals involved in several high-profile Mafia crimes.
His arrest in January involved more than 100 members of the armed forces.
It took place at a private clinic in Palermo, Sicily, where he was undergoing chemotherapy.
For years, Italian investigators tried to catch Denaro by monitoring people close to him.
This led to the arrest of his sister, Patrizia, and several of his associates in 2013.
Authorities also seized valuable businesses connected to him, leaving him increasingly isolated.
Denaro managed to avoid being photographed, and police had to use digital composites to recreate his appearance during the decades he spent on the run.
His voice was not publicly known until 2021.
In an unusual case, in September 2021, a Formula 1 fan from Liverpool was mistakenly arrested at gunpoint in a restaurant in the Netherlands, as he was thought to be Matteo Messina Denaro.
