Ministry Of Health Issues Warning On Disease Risks During Festive Season Amid El Niño

Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory urging caution during the festive season.

Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized the potential for a rise in diseases due to heavy rainfall and the lack of caution during gatherings.

With many individuals traveling to their upcountry homes for Christmas and New Year celebrations, the ministry has cautioned about the increased risk of water-borne diseases and vector-borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya.

“The public is advised to avoid crossing swollen rivers and to relocate from high-risk areas prone to landslides and floods. Strict adherence to sanitation and hygiene practices is crucial, including frequent handwashing and proper waste disposal,” Muthoni stated.

Additionally, individuals are advised to treat water before consumption to prevent water-related illnesses.

The public is also cautioned against consuming meat that has not been inspected by certified officers to avoid foodborne diseases.

In the event of illness after consuming food or water, immediate medical attention is recommended.

Moreover, individuals with long-term medical conditions such as HIV, TB, and diabetes are urged to ensure they have an ample supply of medications to last throughout the festive season.
