A recent opinion poll conducted by Infotrak Research indicates significant opposition among Kenyans to new taxes proposed in the Finance Bill 2024.
Eight out of 10 respondents oppose taxes on essential items like bread and cooking oil, as well as levies on financial services and environmentally harmful products.
The poll, conducted between May 25 and May 29, 2024, also reveals that 63 percent of Kenyans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, largely due to the soaring cost of living and rampant unemployment.
Awareness of the Finance Bill is relatively low, with only 54 percent of respondents indicating awareness of its existence.
Notably, respondents in the Central Region exhibited the highest awareness at 62 percent, while Eastern Region had the lowest at 41 percent.
Infotrak Research Manager Johvine Wanyingo emphasized the need for greater public awareness about the bill’s impact, particularly during President William Ruto‘s administration.
Comparisons to previous polls suggest that dissatisfaction with high taxes and the cost of living has been consistent over the past year.
Nairobi, Eastern, and Nyanza regions registered the highest percentages of respondents believing the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Only a minority of Kenyans, 19 percent, believe the country is on the right path. Concerns about unemployment cut across gender lines, with 32 percent of male adults and 29 percent of females highlighting it as a major issue.
The poll, conducted through quantitative interviews with 1,700 respondents across all 47 counties and eight regions, carries a 95 percent degree of confidence.
