A dispute over electoral zoning has exposed growing cracks between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
The disagreement surfaced during events in Migori and Homa Bay, where leaders clashed over proposals to restrict certain seats to specific candidates.
Supporters at the grassroots and some regional leaders rejected the idea, insisting on open competition.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot downplayed the fallout, saying the coalition will resolve the issue through dialogue.
However, others called for structured talks, while some leaders openly opposed zoning, arguing it limits voter choice and unfairly favors individuals.
Despite the tensions, a section of leaders expressed support for President Ruto’s re-election but maintained that other positions should remain competitive.
The debate highlights internal strain within the ODM-UDA arrangement, with leaders balancing political cooperation against pressure from their support bases.
