Police in Kakamega County have arrested an 18-year-old woman following the death of a one-year-old girl who sustained a severe head injury under unclear circumstances at Musoli Market.
According to police, the child’s mother told investigators that she had briefly handed her one-year-old daughter to a female friend to hold.
The woman allegedly walked away with the child before later calling the mother to inform her that the toddler had suffered a deep cut to the head.
Police officers responded to the scene, a salon within Musoli Market, where they found the child bleeding heavily from a deep head wound while still in the woman’s arms.
The officers, together with the child’s mother, rushed the toddler to St. Pius Mission Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was transferred to Mukumu Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police arrested the suspect aged 18, and she remains in custody as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Investigators are expected to determine how the fatal injury was inflicted and establish a possible motive.
Meanwhile, police in Kiambu County are investigating the death of a 49-year-old man whose decomposing body was recovered from the Ndarugu River in Thika East Sub-County.
The body of David Mungai Nyambura, a 49-year-old man, was spotted floating in the river by members of the public, who alerted police on Monday afternoon.
Police responded to the scene and, with the assistance of local residents, retrieved the body from the river.
Police said the body was already in an advanced state of decomposition when it was recovered.
Crime scene investigators processed the scene before the body was moved to General Kago Hospital Mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination.
The circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation, police said on Tuesday.
