Parliament Prepares For Two-Week Recess After Budget Sessions

Parliament is set to commence a two-week recess starting from Friday, June 28, following the completion of budget-related activities.

The motion for recess, initiated by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, emphasized the need for legislators to engage with their constituents through public participation on the NGCDF proposals, recently bolstered by an additional Ksh.30 million.

During the parliamentary session, Nominated MP John Mbadi opposed the recess motion, urging fellow members to postpone it in light of ongoing protests against the Finance Bill across the country.

Mbadi underscored the importance of lawmakers remaining present to address public concerns and potentially amend legislative decisions if necessary.

Speaker Moses Wetangula subsequently put forward the recess motion, which garnered unanimous approval from the majority of parliamentarians.

The scheduled recess allows MPs time to review and possibly amend the Finance Bill, which is slated for deliberation in the Committee of the Whole House on Tuesday.

This stage will involve voting on amendments to each clause of the bill.

Following the Committee stage, the Finance Bill will proceed to its Third Reading, where members will vote on its final adoption or rejection.

If approved, the bill will proceed for presidential assent, becoming law.

The parliamentary decision to recess amidst nationwide protests highlights the intersection of legislative duties and public sentiment regarding the Finance Bill 2024.

The upcoming sessions are pivotal as MPs navigate through amendments and finalize deliberations on a bill that has drawn significant public scrutiny and debate.
