President William Ruto has announced the revival of the Kazi Mtaani program, now rebranded as “Climate Works Mashinani.”
Speaking in Kisumu on Saturday, Ruto revealed that the initiative is currently in the planning stages and is set to commence in a month.
The President’s announcement comes in response to a call from Kisumu leaders for increased job opportunities for the region’s youth.
Under the new program, young people will engage in activities focused on environmental conservation and other related tasks.
“You’ve asked us to start work for the young people in the streets.
Give me one month to plan.
After that, we will launch the Climate Works program in Mashinani.
You will assist with environmental projects and other activities.
There are new job opportunities coming up,” Ruto stated.
The President emphasized his commitment to creating diverse income-generating opportunities for young people across the country.
While some will benefit from the Climate Works program, others will find employment through affordable housing projects, digital jobs, manufacturing, market work, and even opportunities abroad.
The original Kazi Mtaani program, introduced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aimed to mitigate the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic by providing weekly wages to young people involved in community cleaning efforts.
However, when Ruto took office in 2022, he discontinued this initiative, stating that the focus should shift to housing projects rather than waste collection.
“Kaazi Mtaani is outdated.
The new emphasis will be on building houses rather than collecting garbage. The first beneficiaries of this housing project will be from Kibra,” Ruto said.
He added that the housing program is designed not only to provide homes but also to create substantial employment opportunities.
Ruto acknowledged that the previous Kazi Mtaani program employed only a small number of individuals.
With the new housing initiative, he aims to significantly expand job opportunities and support the economic growth of various communities.
