Safaricom has introduced a new feature on its My OneApp platform that allows customers with compatible smartphones to request, track and activate electronic SIM cards without visiting a physical outlet.
The new functionality is available through the profile section of My OneApp, the telecommunications company’s digital platform that brings together services such as M-Pesa, airtime purchases and data bundles.
Customers can access the feature by downloading the application from the App Store or updating it to the latest version.
How to request and activate an eSIM
To begin the process, customers need to open My OneApp, navigate to the profile section and select the eSIM request option.
After submitting their applications, users can monitor the progress through the same section and activate their digital SIM cards once the requests have been processed.
Safaricom has also advised customers to confirm that their smartphones support eSIM technology before initiating the process, as not every modern handset has the required capability.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM integrated into a compatible device, eliminating the need for a removable physical card.
According to the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the technology allows mobile subscriptions to be downloaded and managed remotely while maintaining security protections comparable to those of conventional SIM cards.
The technology is increasingly available on smartphones, smartwatches and tablets.

Among its benefits is the ability to activate mobile services without visiting a shop. Users can also store multiple mobile profiles on one device and conveniently add international mobile plans when travelling abroad.
Safaricom’s latest addition reflects a wider telecommunications industry shift towards digital self-service platforms, allowing customers to manage more services through mobile applications instead of relying on physical outlets.
Safaricom rolls out SD-WAN service for businesses
The eSIM feature follows Safaricom’s launch of a managed software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) service on October 8, 2026, targeting businesses operating across multiple locations.
The service combines connectivity management, security, equipment and round-the-clock technical support under monthly subscription packages.
Businesses can choose from three plans with contract periods of 12, 24 or 36 months, without paying upfront hardware costs.
Monthly charges for each branch start at KSh9,500 under the Basic Plus package on a 36-month contract. Connectivity charges are billed separately.
