Sh.2.64 Billion Net Worth: Properties Owned By 6 Returning Cabinet Secretaries

Six Cabinet Secretaries are set to return in President William Ruto’s newly formed Cabinet as part of his strategy for a broad-based government.

The reappointed CSs are Kithure Kindiki (Interior), Alice Wahome (Lands), Aden Duale (Defence), Rebecca Miano (Attorney General), Davis Chirchir (Transport), and Soipan Tuya (Environment).

These six, along with five other nominees, will undergo vetting in Parliament to determine their suitability for office and ability to fulfill their responsibilities.

A critical aspect of the vetting process involves the nominees’ net worth and properties.

According to the Public Officer Ethics Act 2003, every public officer must declare their incomes, assets, and liabilities.

Failure to do so, or providing false information, is an offense punishable by a fine of up to Ksh.1 million or a one-year jail term, or both.

In October 2022, the net worth of the six reappointed CSs was revealed to be a combined Ksh.2.64 billion. Here is a breakdown of their assets:

Kithure Kindiki

The Interior CS has a net worth of Ksh.544 million, derived from his law practice, businesses, and consultancy work. His assets include land and buildings worth Ksh.165 million, bank deposits of Ksh.50 million, and investments in shares and Saccos.

Aden Duale

The Defence CS nominee declared his net worth to be Ksh.851 million, with his wealth coming from assets and annual income. He owns 231 camels in Kitui County, sheep, and earns Ksh.10 million annually, mainly from rentals.

Alice Wahome

In October 2022, Wahome declared her net worth to be Ksh.218 million. Her assets are shared with her husband, Dr. Godfrey Wahome Ng’ayu, a certified obstetrician and gynecologist. Her income sources include her salary as an MP, monthly rent from properties, and a monthly allowance of Ksh.100,000 from her law firm. She stated, “I get a fuel allowance of about Ksh.100,000 from my firm and also from these properties, which are in my name, I get about Ksh.500,000 a month but at the moment they do not have tenants since Covid and therefore I have no income coming from that end. I’m relying on the little Ksh.100,000 and the MP salary.”

Rebecca Miano

Previously the East African Community CS and now set to become the first female Attorney General, Miano declared a net worth of Ksh.397 million in 2022. Her assets include property shared with her husband, two houses in Nyahururu and Nairobi, and three vehicles: a Toyota Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero, and Isuzu truck.

Davis Chirchir

The former Energy CS, now Transport CS, declared a net worth of Ksh.482 million in October 2022. His assets include homes in Karen and Kilimani, rental apartments in Westlands, and a family-owned tea value-addition business. He stated, “My financial network as declared in item number 25 in the criteria of vetting and approval is Ksh.482 million, tabulated as farms in Olengurwaini, Kipsenoi, a house in Spring Valley valued at Ksh.95 million, my Karen residence, some rental property in Westlands, in Matundu valued at Ksh.50 million, vehicles, bank accounts and investments in a family tea value addition business called Chebango EPZ tea company at Ksh.185 million.” His annual income is Ksh.12 million, coming from salary, farm, and rental returns.

Soipan Tuya

The returning Environment CS declared her net worth to be Ksh.156 million during the vetting session. Her assets include three homes in Nairobi, Narok, and her village, as well as motor vehicles, apartments, plots of land, and a dairy business.
