Speaker Moses Wetangula Urges MPs to Prioritize National Budget Process

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has reprimanded Members of Parliament for politicizing the national budget-making process, urging them to focus on their crucial role in its formulation and passage.

Addressing MPs at the funeral service of Mzee Yonah Namuli in Sanandiki village, Bungoma, Wetangula emphasized the importance of MPs working within the parliamentary system to address any issues rather than airing grievances publicly.

“You have had a one-month recess, and now it is time to focus on the national budget. You are the representatives who formulate and pass the budget in committees and the National Assembly,” Wetangula asserted, stressing the need for constructive engagement.

Wetangula underscored that the time for complaints has passed and urged MPs to concentrate on finding solutions and fostering collaboration.

“Please save the public the agony of coming to cry in public that the budget is bad yet you are the ones who pass it… Stay in parliament and do the right thing for the people of Kenya. The public is counting on you because they voted for you,” he urged.

Meanwhile, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on MPs allied with the Azimio opposition coalition to reject the proposed Finance Bill 2024 when it is tabled in parliament.

Musyoka, speaking at Azimio’s Parliamentary Group meeting in Nairobi, criticized the bill’s harsh tax proposals on key items, warning that its implementation would adversely affect ordinary Kenyans.

“The Kenya Kwanza administration will still ignore Kenyans’ concerns and implement the Bill as it is just like they did to the Finance Bill 2023,” Kalonzo asserted, highlighting the coalition’s readiness to take to the streets if necessary to advocate for the public’s interests.

The statements by Speaker Wetangula and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka underscore the ongoing debate surrounding the Finance Bill 2024 and the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration among MPs to address concerns and ensure the budget serves the interests of all Kenyans.
