A student from St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega County, collapsed and passed away following participation in a school marathon.
The student, Timothy Akila, who was 20 years old and in Form Four, collapsed during the race and was taken to Chekalini Hospital, where he later died.

His father, Fred Amugunya, recounted speaking to his son that morning before he left for school.

“I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games.
I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” said Amugunya, who tragically never saw his son alive again.
He received a devastating call informing him of his son’s death.
Expressing deep sorrow, Amugunya stated, “I don’t know what really happened.”
The family is requesting the government to conduct an investigation into the incident.
Chief Julius Mpapale of the area advised parents and teachers to be aware of students’ health conditions, particularly those involved in sports, to prevent such crises in the future.
