Assorted foodstuff worth Sh10 million collected by Uasin Gishu county residents to support famine-stricken families in the north rift region was flagged off Saturday.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said the food donations will go towards assisting the most vulnerable hunger-stricken families in the region.

He said the food is destined for Turkana County which is currently the most affected due to the ravaging drought.

The donations will support more than 5,000 families for at least one month.

He also said the business community and farmers began the initiative following reports that a number of families were sleeping hungry.

He applauded residents for lending a hand to families who are sleeping hungry during these tough economic times.

North Rift Chair of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Willy Kenei said his membership will continue working with Bii’s administration in development programs.

Kenei also pointed out that Bii’s administration is determined to earn Eldoret’s City status a move that will create more business opportunities for existing and new entrepreneurs.

The business community was represented by Eldoret Hindu Council, Buffalo Millers, New Yako Supermarkets, Reale Group of Hospitals, Eldobase Pharmaceuticals amongst others.
