Upper Hill School Closed After Students’ Unrest

Upper Hill School in Nairobi was Tuesday night closed after students went on riot and destroyed property.

Police and the school administration said property of unknown value was destroyed in the incident.

The students damaged property in the kitchen, store, canteen, classrooms and staff room.

Police were called to the scene and oversaw the closure after the school administration decided to send the students home past midnight on Wednesday.

The parents and guardians were called to pick their boys.

Police stood guard at the school until morning when some students were picked.

The incident is under probe to establish the motive.

This is the latest such incident to happen among schools in the past week, police said.

Nine students at a school in Samburu, Kwale County were arrested for damaging property during riots.

Another school in Gilgil, Nakuru County experienced riots.

Police said students at Emburu Secondary School destroyed property.

Meanwhile, tension briefly gripped Asati Beach in Seme Sub-county, Kisumu County, after fishermen confronted Kenya Wildlife Service officers who had arrested suspected illegal fishermen within a restricted area near Ndere Island.

According to the police, the incident occurred on the morning of May 19, 2026, at around 5:50 am but was formally reported later in the afternoon by Crispine Otieno, the BMU chairman and patrol boat coxswain at Asati Beach.

The report states that fishermen returning from a night fishing expedition were intercepted by KWS officers and ordered to sail toward the Ndere National Park camp after allegedly being found operating in a restricted zone.

As the officers escorted the boats, other fishermen at Asati Beach reportedly noticed the arrests and mobilized several boats in an attempt to rescue their colleagues.

Police officers who visited the scene established that the KWS officers, fearing for their safety after being surrounded by numerous boats, fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd.

The situation was later calmed through the intervention of the BMU chairman and fisheries officers, who persuaded the fishermen to return to shore.

Normal activities resumed after the standoff, and no injuries were reported during the incident.
