What caused the Mozambique Ferry tragedy that killed Over 90 people?


More than 90 people died after a ferry capsized off the coast of northern Mozambique,

Confirming the incident Lourenco Machado, an official from Mozambique’s Maritime Transport Institute said that the vessel was carrying passengers beyond its capacity.

Five people have been rescued out of 130 people believed to be on board the ferry. Among of them who bordered the ferry were said to fleeing away from cholera outbreak while many of them who died on the incident are children.

A report indicate that the boat was stuck by a tidal wave, causing it to capsize and plunge its occupant’s into the perilous waters below

A confirmed video posted on social media allegedly shows dozens of bodies lying on the beach.

 The ferry was traveling from Lunga to the island of Mozambique, off the coast of Nampula.

Regional of Nampula has been among the countries most affected by cholera disease that has spread in several countries in southern Africa since January last year.

According to UNICEF, the current outbreak is the worst in 25 years, Since October 2023, Mozambique has reported 13,700 confirmed cases of cholera and 30 deaths.

The Islamic insurgent group in the neighboring state of Cabo Delgado has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 People and displaced nearly a million people since it began its offensive six years ago.

Since 400 years, the island of Mozambique was the capital of Portuguese East Africa, while the region was under colonial rule. The island is a UNESCO world heritage site for its colonial architecture and unique history as a trading hub.
