In Dedan Kimathi University there has been a tug-o-war after president gave a sum of money to the entertainment students.
Recently, President William Ruto visited the school on March 26 and was able to give sh1 million to entertainment students at Dedan Kimathi University. The incident was able to bring heated debate to Kenyans while others went online and mocked the sh180 that is to be distributed among student.
Kenyans doubt the student’s decision to want the money to be distributed among themselves instead of being used to prepare lunch as per others opinions.
This was after the school decide to do a campaign on how the money should be used. Some student told the media that although there are those who despise the money, there are those who, instead of the money used for one lunch at school its better if they get the cash that they can budget for themselves for few days.
“We buy food from as low as sh25, so if the student can get that small amount of sh180, then he can survive with it within seven days” said one of the student.
“The money that is available is better because not everyone will benefit from the bursary program or the one day lunch, so I voted every student to get a share from the donation to ensure justice” added another student.
According to school memo dated April 9, Students’ Welfare Director Esther Nthiga noted that following public participation made through Google Form, many chose to obtain a fair share from the donation.
There were three options-share money equally, prepare lunch or set it aside for student’s bursary kitty. In the results of the vote, Nthiga said the students who supported sharing money were 51 percent,36.4 percent of the students asked for lunch, while another 35.5 percent wanted the money to be sent to student bursary.
The university concluded to deserve sh180 to each student from the donation, while the class representatives are awaited to collect the money from the directorate.
