On Tuesday, Wikipedia unveiled its list of the 25 most-viewed pages of 2023, offering insights into the year’s global interests.
Managed by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia garnered over 84 billion page views in 2023, as reported by CNN.
The top spot went to the page on OpenAI’s virtual chatbot, ChatGPT, which recorded a staggering 49.4 million page views.
ChatGPT made headlines for its rapid user base growth, reaching 100 million active users in January.
The page delves into the technology behind ChatGPT and its use of Wikipedia data for training.
Anusha Alikhan, Chief Communications Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, noted the public’s curiosity about ChatGPT’s history and technology.
Wikipedia’s role in training large language models was emphasized, with Alikhan highlighting the collaborative nature of Wikipedia data compiled by human editors.
The remaining top five pages included biographies of individuals who passed away in 2023, the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the Indian Premier League, and the film “Oppenheimer.”
Indian and Southeast Asian influences were evident, constituting a fifth of the list.
Alikhan attributed this to the substantial number of active Wikipedia editors in India, ranking behind only the United States and the United Kingdom.
The 2023 Cricket World Cup, where India was the runner-up, attracted significant attention, with the page receiving over 38 million views. Notably, cricket-related articles appeared in Wikipedia’s top 25 for the first time.
Two Indian Bollywood films, “Jawan” and “Pathaan,” outperformed globally successful American films like “Barbie” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in Wikipedia views.
The film “Oppenheimer” also surpassed its box office earnings in page views.
Prominent figures in sports, entertainment, and business, including Taylor Swift, Elon Musk, and Lionel Messi, are featured in the list.
Unfavorable topics, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and controversial influencer Andrew Tate, also drew significant Wikipedia traffic.
The list reflected the dynamic landscape of global interests in 2023, shaped by technological advancements, sports events, and cultural influences from diverse regions.
