Arctic conditions embraced vast stretches of Russia on Tuesday, plunging temperatures in Siberia to a bone-chilling minus 58 degrees Celsius (minus 72 degrees Fahrenheit).
Drone footage captured Yakutsk, one of the world’s coldest cities located 5,000 km (3,100 miles) east of Moscow, blanketed in freezing clouds and fog.
Danila, who deliberately sought out Yakutsk’s extreme weather, shared his experience, “I specifically came here to Yakutsk to experience such weather – so I am lucky, as in December, you don’t usually get it.”
His beard, hat, and scarf were encased in ice, but he emphasized, “I am actually not that cold as I prepared properly.
If I had not got the right clothes, I would be frozen in minutes.”
The frigid temperatures had a visible impact, stiffening coats and draining phone batteries within minutes.
Danila stressed the importance of wearing two pairs of gloves and multiple layers of clothing to endure the extreme cold.
In the Sakha Republic, a vast region in northeastern Siberia slightly smaller than India, temperatures dropped below minus 55 overnight.
Oymyakon, a settlement in Sakha, recorded a bone-chilling minus 58°C on Tuesday, which, considering humidity and wind, felt like minus 63°C according to weather forecasters.
Yakutsk’s market reflected the harsh conditions, with fish being sold deep frozen in boxes without the need for a freezer.
Saleswomen donned in large fur hats, navigated the cold.
A resident named Pyotr commented, “It is cold.
You need to just have the right quality clothes, and then everything will be okay.
The main thing is to keep moving so your blood circulates.”
