The boss of the Confederation of Trade Unions (COTU-K) SG Francis Atwoli has opposed the new Labor Relation (Amendment) Bill 2024.
The bill tabled by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch provides a time for officials of trade unions and employers’ organizations of confederations.
In a statement on Thursday, Atwoli described the move as incomprehensible and retrograde.
Atwoli has called on Senator Oketch to withdraw the Bill unconditionally and instead involve the National Labor Board.
He said the National Labor Board is the board required to produce and recommend any meaningful amendments to our five sets of Labor Laws.
He added that the proposal is against the principles of free and independent trade unions as emphasized by Convention 87, 98 and 144 of the International Labor organization.
“Trade unions are important, free and independent organizations that represent the interests of workers in various sectors in Kenya, Their operations are guided by their constitutions that establish internal democratic processes.” Atwoli said.
Atwoli emphasized Cotu’s commitment to defending the freedom and independence of trade unions in Kenya.
The Cotu boss said the trade unions have fought hard for the freedom of the country and the freedom that all Kenyans, including the Senator himself, enjoy.
The bill seeks to end the current arrangement where officials can hold office for as many terms as possible provided they are validly elected and re-elected.
