Members of the Cabinet Tuesday unanimously resolved to forego one month’s salary as their contribution towards drought mitigation efforts in the country.
The money will be donated to the national hunger kitty. Already the military has donated Sh130 million to the kitty and other government agencies are being mobilized to donate.
President William Ruto chaired the third Cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi, which considered various policy matters including an assessment of the impact of the interventions implemented to mitigate the effects of drought.
A statement sent to newsrooms, said the meeting commended efforts of the recently named National Drought Response Steering Committee, chaired by Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa mobilizing resources to address the crisis.
“The meeting hailed the growing partnership between the State, Development Partners and the nation’s private sector that is taking place under the auspices of the National Steering Committee on Drought Response.”
“In solidarity with all Kenyans affected by the ongoing drought, the meeting resolved that all Members will forgo one-month salary as their individual and collective contribution towards the ongoing State interventions that support all the Kenyans affected by the drought.”
The National Steering Committee on Drought Response will, among other things, mobilise resources to augment the government’s drought response programme.
