In a pointed remark during the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi,
President William Ruto expressed his frustrations regarding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was recently impeached by both the National Assembly and the Senate.
Ruto voiced feelings of isolation and a lack of support within the executive, stating, “I have often felt like a solitary voice in the presidency over the past two years, having to advocate for government projects and initiatives without the backing of my deputy.”
His comments shed light on the challenges he faced during Gachagua’s tenure.
With a renewed sense of optimism, Ruto praised Kindiki’s capabilities, indicating that he expects a more collaborative approach moving forward.
“I have been left to articulate our plans and achievements alone. I am confident that you will bring the support I’ve been missing,” Ruto said, highlighting Kindiki’s potential to fill the leadership gap.
The President characterized Kindiki as a dedicated and competent leader, praising his track record of excellence in public service.
“I am honored to witness Prof. Kindiki’s swearing-in as Kenya’s third Deputy President under the new Constitution.
His career is marked by remarkable accomplishments that reflect his vision for positive change and a commitment to high standards,” Ruto stated.
Addressing Kindiki directly, Ruto added, “You are articulate and intelligent. Your voice is needed in our executive team to help us realize the aspirations outlined in our Constitution.”
This marks the first time Ruto has commented on Gachagua’s impeachment since returning from the United Nations General Assembly, where speculation about his involvement in the ousting had circulated.
Gachagua was officially impeached on October 17, following a significant Senate vote that cited gross constitutional violations and breaches of the oath of office, although many legislators defended him against allegations of money laundering.
