The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is gearing up to assist the Ministry of Transport in a significant makeover of the Garissa airstrip, marking a pivotal moment in its four-decade history.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, in a statement from the KDF, announced the ministry’s commitment to deploying armed forces personnel for the expansive project.
The focus will be on extending the current runway from 1.2 to 1.4 kilometers and implementing substantial improvements to enhance the overall appearance of the airstrip.
According to the statement, Duale assured the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) of the unwavering support from the Ministry of Defence in the ambitious refurbishment of Garissa Airstrip.

The objective is to make the facility more accommodating for various aircraft and streamline the transportation of goods and people.
The project, divided into three phases, has already initiated groundwork with the contractor on-site.
The initial phase will involve constructing a perimeter wall around the facility and expanding the runway.
During his visit to the airstrip, Duale, accompanied by Garissa County Governor Nadhif Jamah, Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, State Department for Transport’s Mohamed Daghar, Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF) Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi, and other high-ranking officials from both ministries, reiterated the commitment to the successful execution of the project.
