In San Francisco, a man drove his car into the Chinese consulate and was shot and killed by the police on Monday.
The police arrived at the scene and shot the man, whose identity remains unknown.
Videos shared online showed a blue Honda car inside the consulate’s lobby, and many people were seen rushing out of the building in fear.
The consulate issued a statement condemning the incident, stating that it posed a significant threat to the safety of its staff and others present.
They also expressed their strong disapproval of this violent attack and reserved the right to seek responsibility for it.
“We strongly condemn this violent attack and reserve the right to pursue responsibility for the incident,” it added.
Additionally, they formally communicated their discontent to the U.S. authorities, urging them to handle the matter appropriately.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident but have not provided further details.
Photographs depict a substantial police presence around the consulate building in the city’s Japantown neighborhood.
The lobby area had queue barriers and chairs scattered about, along with other furniture that had been damaged during the incident.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported from within the consulate.
It’s worth noting that San Francisco is set to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation next month, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend.
