NPSC Advertises Positions Of DIG After Changes


The police employer Saturday declared vacant two positions of Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) following a significant security shakeup.

The National Police Service Commission is seeking to recruit a DIG for the Kenya Police Service (KPS) and a DIG for the Administration Police Service (APS).

This recruitment drive follows the resignation of former Inspector General (IG) Japheth Koome.

President William Ruto confirmed Koome’s resignation and subsequently appointed Douglas Kanja as the acting IG of NPS.

Kanja assumed his duties on Friday afternoon.

Eliud Lagat, the former Commandant of the General Service Unit was named acting DIG Kenya Police and James Kamau, the former Commandant of the Administration Training Police Campus- Embakasi was named acting DIG APS.

Commission chairman Eliud Kinuthia said they are ready to facilitate the process.

Interested candidates must be Kenyan citizens, hold a degree from a recognized university, have a distinguished career in their respective fields, meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution, and have served in the police service for at least 15 years.

Additionally, they should currently hold the rank of Assistant Inspector General or higher.

The role of DIG-KPS involves commanding, controlling, and administering the Kenya Police Service under the direction of the IG.

The DIG-APS is responsible for leading the Administration Police Service and operates under the directions and control of the IG.

“Each application should be accompanied by detailed curriculum vitae, copies of relevant academic and professional testimonials and other relevant supporting documents.

Scanned copies of these documents must accompany an online application,” the gazette announcement reads.

The applications should be addressed to the Chairperson of the National Police Service Commission before July 17, 2024.

Manual applications should be delivered to the Office of the Commission Secretary/Chief Executive Officer at CBK Pension Towers, 9th floor.

Online applications should be emailed in PDF format to digrecruitment@npsc.go.ke.

Shortlisted candidates will be announced in the print media.

President William Ruto announced the resignation of Inspector General of police Japhet Koome in the changes.

In his own circle, Ruto transferred the commander of his security team- Presidential Escort Unit William Yiampoi.

He did not name a new Prescot commander but insiders said a new leader will be in place soon.

Koome’s position will be filled by a person Ruto will nominate and send a name to Parliament for vetting.

The president announced he appointed Kanja as the acting IG to replace Koome.

Koome had assumed the position in October 2022. He is the third IG to leave office before finishing his term.

And upon the recommendation of the National Police Service Commission, Ruto designated Lagat as the DIG Kenya Police and Kamau as the acting DIG APS.

The positions have to be filled competitively.

Director of operations at police headquarters Renson Lolmodoon was named the new commandant of GSU.

Ruto’s head of security Yiampoi was moved to police headquarters and named the director of operations while Muranga police boss David Mathiu was named the commandant of the national police leadership academy in Ngong.
More changes are expected in the coming days.
