A passenger bus was Tuesday detained by police after it was found ferrying an AK47 rifle in Tarbaj area, Wajir County.

The recovery was made as the bus raced from Mandera to Nairobi, police said.

This sparked fears the weapon with 201 bullets was headed for a mission that police are now investigating.

The Legend Bus Company, which was heading to Nairobi from Mandera was carrying 57 passengers at the time of the incident.

Police said the bus was suspected of carrying contraband goods and was taken to Tarbaj Police Station for a thorough search whereby a multi-agency team a thorough search was conducted.

Police are investigating the motive of the weapon that was concealed in cargo.

Police say the border contributes to almost 30 percent of crimes committed in the country.

Some of the illegal weapons used in crimes originate in the area.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said last week the government will delay the planned phased-out reopening of the Kenya-Somalia border points to facilitate comprehensive and conclusive handling of the recent wave of terror attacks and cross-border crime.

Terror suspects have been breaching the border to attack government officials in a worrying trend.

This has left more than 30 people dead in a month alone.

Kenya planned to re-open the border points starting this month after it remained closed since 2011.

Kenya is on course with the construction of the 700 km-long barrier along its border with Somalia.
