President William Ruto has publicly expressed his gratitude to ODM leader Raila Odinga for his role in fostering national unity during the recent Gen Z youth protests, which had the potential to divide the country.
Speaking in Kisumu County on the final day of his development tour of Luo Nyanza, President Ruto lauded Odinga as a key figure who has shown deep concern for the nation’s well-being.
In his address, Ruto described Odinga as an “elder brother” and praised his commitment to national unity, saying,
“I want to thank my elder brother Raila Odinga for agreeing that we should set aside our differences and focus on the unity, stability, security, and progress of our country.
Raila, despite being my opponent and my party leader in the past, today we stand together for Kenya.
I salute you as a true patriot with the nation’s best interests at heart.”
Ruto and Odinga have recently reconciled and decided to work collaboratively, with ODM contributing four ministers to the newly integrated government following the dissolution of the Kenya First cabinet in July.
This move marks a significant shift in their political relationship, aimed at strengthening the government and addressing national issues more effectively.
In return for Odinga’s support, President Ruto has pledged to advocate for Odinga’s candidacy for the chair of the African Union Commission (AUC) across Africa.
Ruto’s commitment to this cause reflects a broader effort to consolidate support and enhance Kenya’s position within the African continent.
The President’s acknowledgment underscores a period of collaboration between the two leaders, highlighting their joint efforts to ensure national cohesion and advance Kenya’s interests on the international stage.
