Rwanda is using drones to help stop crimes that harm the environment.

The government, along with the Ministry of Environment, is working together to fight these illegal actions.

Drones are being used to gather information, check for problems before they happen, and help with investigations into environmental crimes.

This was reported in the New Times newspaper on Monday.

Rwanda’s Environment Minister, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, mentioned, “The drones will help to respond to and control activities that damage our environment including land degradation, water pollution, and illegal logging in protected areas.”

The government is focusing on stopping activities like illegal mining, water pollution, illegal logging, and people encroaching on protected areas like parks and riverbanks.

Ms. Mujawamariya thanked the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) for helping in the fight against environmental damage.

“We thank the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) who joined us in the fight against environmental degradation where they conducted sensitization campaigns on environmental crimes, identified victims of those environmental crimes, offenders and opened case files for prosecution,” Ms. Mujawamariya said.

Rwanda has a goal to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

To achieve this, they have a long-term plan called the Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy.

They also have an ambitious plan to reduce emissions by 38% by 2030.
