Zambia Faces Challenges In Retrieving Trapped Miners After Mine Mudslide

Zambian authorities are facing difficulties in locating numerous illegal miners suspected to be trapped following a mudslide at an open-cast copper mine last Friday.

The incident, sparked by heavy rains in Zambia’s northern Copperbelt province, has prompted ongoing rescue efforts at the Sesili mine in Chingola.

Despite extensive efforts by rescue teams to pump water from the underground pits, there has been no contact with the miners.

President Hakainde Hichilema, who returned from the COP28 conference in Dubai on Sunday, expressed sorrow over the “heartbreaking situation” and extended his thoughts and prayers to the affected families.

He assured that government resources are actively engaged in the rescue mission.

Vice-President Mutale Nalumango characterized the incident at the Sesili mine as a “disaster,” emphasizing the severity of the situation.

The rescue operations persist as illegal mining remains a prevalent issue in Zambia, a key global copper producer.

Authorities are tirelessly working to address the challenges posed by the accident and bring relief to the affected miners and their families.
