Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is grieving the loss of his son, Athman, who passed away recently at Coptic Hospital.
Journalist Kwamtchesi Makoha shared the news, expressing condolences to Mutunga and revealing that Athman, aged 50, died on Saturday, October 12.
He will be laid to rest in Kitui County on Sunday, October 13, at 4:00 p.m., according to Muslim burial rites.
Reports indicate that Athman had undergone four surgeries over the past two months, and despite the doctors’ optimism for his recovery, he ultimately did not survive.
The family has not disclosed details about the illness that necessitated the surgeries.
Following the announcement, many Kenyans extended their sympathies to Mutunga on social media.
Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official Roselyne Akombe conveyed her condolences on her X account, offering words of comfort to the former Chief Justice.
Similarly, Athman’s childhood friend, Jacklyn Juma, expressed her sorrow, describing him as a beloved friend and brother.
Activist Al Amin Kimathi, another close friend of Mutunga, also shared his sympathies, praying for peace and comfort for the family.
Mutunga, Kenya’s first Chief Justice under the new constitution, served from June 20, 2011, to June 16, 2016.
He played a pivotal role in judicial reforms and addressing case backlogs during his tenure.
Beyond his career, he is known for his love of family, often sharing photos of himself enjoying time with his grandchildren in retirement.
