The National Assembly Committee on Appointments has decided to reject Stella Lang’at’s nomination for the Gender Ministry in President William Ruto’s Cabinet.
The committee’s decision, detailed in a report presented for House debate on Wednesday, also recommended Lang’at’s dismissal from her current role as Director of Administration in the Ministry of Interior.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah presented the report, which cleared the remaining Cabinet nominees proposed by President Ruto.
The committee completed its review and approval hearings on Sunday, having vetted a total of twenty nominees.
The House was scheduled to debate the report later on Wednesday, with lawmakers set to vote on whether to adopt, reject, or amend the recommendations.
If the report is approved, the names of the confirmed nominees will be sent to President Ruto for final appointment.
Should a nominee be rejected, the President must propose a new candidate, who will then undergo the same vetting process.
The vetting committee received 1,300 submissions regarding the nominees.
According to House Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who chairs the Appointments Committee, 1,087 of these submissions were valid under Article 118(1)(b) of the Constitution and Section 6(9) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011.
The remaining submissions either opposed multiple nominees or were not relevant to the vetting process.
The report’s presentation coincided with calls from the United States urging the rejection of nominees with integrity concerns.
This plea was made amid ongoing protests demanding greater accountability in government.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized the importance of upholding high ethical standards in public appointments as the National Assembly Committee began its review of President Ruto’s Cabinet choices.
