Eugene Wamalwa has announced that his party, the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), is officially pulling out of the Azimio coalition.
This announcement came during a KNEC meeting held in Webuye on Saturday, where Wamalwa expressed his dissatisfaction with the coalition’s current direction.
“As DAP-K, we can no longer align ourselves with those who do not share our values and who have continually supported Zakayo’s push for excessive taxation,” Wamalwa stated.
He criticized certain coalition members for collaborating with the ruling Kenya Kwanza government, attributing this partnership to the coalition’s waning public support.
Wamalwa also expressed frustration over the support some coalition leaders showed for the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which he viewed as a betrayal of their collective interests.
He was particularly critical of the new Cabinet, which includes members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), arguing that their support for President William Ruto’s governance reflects poorly on the coalition.
“When John Mbadi proposes these tax increases, it won’t be perceived as Ruto’s sole responsibility; it will also implicate our ODM colleagues,” he added.
Following this withdrawal, Wamalwa declared that DAP-K would embark on a nationwide campaign to recruit candidates for the upcoming 2027 elections.
“With backing from our county chairpersons, we will initiate an extensive recruitment effort to prepare for the next electoral cycle,”
He announced, emphasizing that the party aims to contest all positions, including MCAs, MPs, Governors, Senators, and even the presidency, with himself positioning as a presidential candidate for the August 10, 2027 election.
This move comes after persistent calls from coalition leaders urging Raila Odinga to reassess his ties with the government, particularly in light of four ODM members joining the administration they previously opposed.
Despite requests for ODM to exit the coalition, no action was taken, leading Wamalwa to make the decision to withdraw his party instead.
It remains to be seen whether other leaders within the Azimio coalition will follow Wamalwa’s example and distance themselves from the coalition in the wake of these developments.
